Co-Creation: The Projects of our MakerSpace Grant Recipients

November 2024. Our MakerSpace grants offer creative minds from Neuperlach the opportunity to use the large workshops in Munich and Garching to realise their own projects for Neuperlach. Thanks to the wide range of training courses, initial ideas from a broad variety of personalities are transformed into inspiring projects. We will show you the first results of our grant recipients!

Katja
Katja used the MakerSpace grant to furnish her own shop in the Perlach Plaza, MABLE – where she offers inclusive and sustainable fashion – and to realise several creative projects for it. With the help of the laser cutter, she designed an individual radiator cover and a bespoke wardrobe with an inset mirror. She also uses the embroidery machine to embroider clothing and patches with her own illustrations. She used the cutting plotter to wrap her shop. Further projects are in the pipeline, including acrylic glass jewellery, new embroidered collections and artworks based on her illustrations.
Training: laser cutter, embroidery machine, cutting plotter
"Having access to ways to make my ideas reality greatly increases my creative potential. It's wonderful to have the resources to implement ideas and to get guidance if you need it."

Edith
Edith visits the MakerSpace workshops weekly to collect creative material for her work with young people at the Feierwerk Südpolstation youth centre.
Her focus is on developing wooden machines for workshops and for open operation. Her ‘endless marble run’, which she built in the MakerSpace and has already successfully used in several workshops with young people, is especially popular. On workshop days, they can build various marble runs and peg machines with her. Edith prepares boxes with mechanisms such as gears and cranks that allow the young people to creatively implement their own ideas. Her future projects in the MakerSpace include the continuation of the ‘Bewegliche Welt’ (World in Motion) automat series and the development of a large chess set for the youth project garden.
Training: woodworking; further training is planned for the continuation of the projects.
"The work in the MakerSpace so far, especially the endless marble run, has been very well received by the young people and has given me valuable experience in creative collaborations with them. That would not have been possible without the grant."

Anna
Anna is one of our NEBourhoods pool of creatives. As a product designer, she works in her design studio ZURÜCK Zero Waste with cutting residues or company-sourced materials that are no longer needed, with the aim of reducing waste. For the NEBourhoods Boulevard in October, she worked together with residents of Neuperlach to create a 150-metre-long chain of pennants. The individual pennant elements were pre-fabricated using the laser cutter at the Garching MakerSpace and sprayed at the NEBourhoods design site. The sewing machine was then used to sew the pennants together into a chain.
Training: laser cutter, sewing machine
"The atmosphere in the MakerSpace is great. Everyone is eager to try new things and to create something. You meet helpful employees and can implement your ideas really well."

Mark
Mark's goal for the MakerSpace grant is to network with other creatives and to sensitise children to craftsmanship and creativity. To this end, he regularly visits the large workshops with his own children Quentin, Silja and Selina – with the proviso that they give away the projects they develop together and thus tell other children about them. So far, they have made key fobs out of wood and acrylic using the laser cutter, and badge holders out of cut and engraved leather. They have also done embroidery work, including a ray on a sweater and a dragon outline on linen with an embroidered dragon on a trouser leg. Another project is a Japanese sword made of wood and resin with LEDs, which is still in progress.
Training: laser cutter, embroidery machine, hand tools and adhesives
"The grant has provided an exchange with others at the MakerSpace, which has led to new ideas and solutions for my own problems. It has also helped my children learn about different materials and techniques."
