Creating NEBourhoods Together

28 March 2025. The future of our cities is in our hands. But how can we succeed in making living and working in them sustainable and inclusive? How can we make the transformation of our urban spaces into a tangible, shared task and responsibility for all of us?

The challenges of urban development – climate change, social inequities and the transition to a circular economy – can only be tackled through interdisciplinary and cooperative solutions. To this end, Creating NEBourhoods Together, one of the six Lighthouse Demonstrators for the New European Bauhaus (NEB) of the European Union, has been working in co-creative processes with the public, local initiatives, the administration, scientific institutions and companies as well as start-ups since the autumn of 2022 to develop prototypes and solutions in Munich-Neuperlach.

Our NEBourhoods actions are broad in scope, addressing the challenges of the future. They focus on the design and use of public spaces for all generations, the upgrading of residential buildings and circularity in the building stock. They explore innovations for increased biodiversity, renewable energy, local mobility and sustainable food systems.

The handbook "NEBourhoods for Tomorrow" documents the methods, strategies and processes developed in our living labs and serves as both an inspiration and a guide for others who wish to follow similar paths.

Arranged according to the groups involved in the transdisciplinary work processes of the NEB, the publication offers reading material and information at various levels: thematic contextual classification, detailed presentations of the prototypes and profiles of each action. It provides pointers to jump-start replication, identify potentials and challenges and explain the evaluation with respect to the NEB compass. Insights and success factors from our co-creation and entrepreneurship processes complement the publication.

Change only happens through collective action, shared responsibility for our environment and the creation of strong networks. Many small changes, when combined, can drive a profound transformation. With our results and methods, we hope to serve as an inspiring model for other European cities by demonstrating how sustainable and inclusive urban development in line with the NEB principles can succeed.
